Ada Salter: Beautifying Bermondsey New for 2017!
A new walk to celebrate the life and achievements of Ada Salter; socialist, pacifist, environmentalist, youth-worker and Quaker. Ada was the first female Mayor in London and the first Labour woman mayor in the British Isles. Ada loved singing and plants; with her husband, local doctor and MP Dr Alfred Salter, she made a significant impact on health, housing, employment and labour relations. The Garden Suburb she created and the tree planting she championed can still be seen today. This walk explores her achievements and the ethical socialism that underpinned them.
“Excellent tour of Ada Salter’s beautiful Bermondsey with Sue McCarthy. We must all try and be a bit more Ada – an inspiration!”
“…wonderful, inspirational and very bloomin’ impressive.”
We are delighted to be offering a couple of slightly different versions of this popular new walk – the first for Open Garden Squares Weekend on 17th June and the second during the Bermondsey Street Festival on 16th September.
